Senior Hamas commander killed in Israeli Gaza strike

A senior Hamas commander was killed in an Israeli airstrike in northern Gaza on Tuesday, according to Israeli and Palestinian sources. Hamas confirmed the death of Izz al-Din al-Beik, head of its armed wing in northern Gaza.

Israeli officials said al-Beik was involved in planning attacks and recruiting fighters. Hamas said he was among the commanders involved in the October 7, 2023 attack.

The strike hit an apartment building in Gaza City’s Nasr neighbourhood around dawn. Palestinian medics said two people were killed in the strike.

Israel has intensified strikes in Gaza in recent weeks, accusing Hamas of violating the ceasefire and rebuilding its military capabilities. Hamas has denied the allegations.
