A Dhaka court on Thursday rejected the bail petition of former Cantonment Police Station officer-in-charge Md Rakibul Hasan in a sedition case filed over allegedly spreading anti-state and provocative remarks on social media.
Metropolitan Magistrate Monirul Islam passed the order following a bail petition filed by Rakibul’s lawyer Morshed Hossain Shaheen.
Rakibul was sent to jail on Wednesday after completing two spells of remand totalling seven days. He was arrested in the case on September 24 and was initially placed on five days remand.
According to the case statement, an audio clip of a conversation allegedly involving Rakibul and an unidentified person contained derogatory and provocative remarks against the state and government. The clip later circulated on social media, drawing widespread attention.
Following the incident, Rakibul was removed as Cantonment Police OC and attached to the DMP headquarters. A sedition case was later filed against him at Cantonment Police Station with approval from the Home Ministry.
