Yemeni government forces carried out 20 airstrikes on Houthi targets in the southwestern province of Taiz over a three-hour period, according to a military spokesperson.
The strikes targeted Houthi movements, reinforcements, personnel, vehicles and military equipment, the spokesperson said on Friday.
The latest strikes come amid a major escalation between Yemen’s internationally recognised government and the Iran-aligned Houthis. The fighting is described as the most serious escalation since a UN-brokered truce in 2022 largely halted cross-border attacks.
Taiz is strategically important because control of the province would strengthen the Houthis’ position in northern Yemen, increase their hold over the Red Sea coast and provide easier access to southern areas and the government-held port city of Aden.
The renewed fighting has already displaced tens of thousands of people and could affect control of territory in Yemen as well as maritime traffic in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
Yemeni authorities have also closed around 19 roads leading to Taiz and designated the affected areas as military zones, according to Reuters.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has accused the Houthis of attacking a power distribution station in Medina that supplies electricity to the Prophet’s Mosque. The Houthis have denied the allegation.
