Clashes kill two, injure 22 at Daulatpur, Chilmari

Separate clashes left two dead and at least 22 injured in Daulatpur Upazila of Kushtia District and Chilmari Upazila of Kurigram District on Thursday.

DAULATPUR, KUSHTIA: A 65-year-old man was killed and at least 10 others were injured in a clash between two local factions in Daulatpur Upazila of the district on Thursday evening.

The clash broke out in Charuikuri Morarpara Village of Ramkrishnapur Union after a long-running feud escalated during a local arbitration. Local sources said the dispute stemmed from the sharing of proceeds from the sale of narcotics and leaf cigarettes.

Deceased Golam Mostafa Tengor was the son of late Dayom of Morarpara. Witnesses said both sides attacked each other with sticks and locally made weapons, leaving several people seriously injured.

Tengor died on the way to Daulatpur Upazila Health Complex. The other injured, including Suman Mia, 51, Hadu Mondal, 72, Rashidul, 36, Fotik, 57, Bazlu, 56, Azad Mondal, 65, and Raju Mondal, 33, were admitted to the hospital.

Police and BGB personnel were deployed in the area after tensions spread following the clash. Patrols were intensified to prevent further violence.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Daulatpur Police Station (PS) Khalidur Rahman said police were investigating the cause of the clash and identifying those involved. The body would be sent for an autopsy.

CHILMARI, KURIGRAM: One person was killed and at least 12 others injured on Thursday morning in a clash over control of disputed land in a remote char area of Nayarhat Union in Chilmari Upazila of the district.

Deceased Hurmuz Ali, 65, was a resident of Kheruarchar of the union. 

The clash erupted near Noab Ali Bazar in Goaler Char after former Rowmari UP member Selim Mia and his supporters went to take possession of the disputed land following a court ruling in his favour. Supporters of rival claimant Tota Mia resisted, triggering the clash.

Eyewitnesses said both sides attacked each other with tractors and locally made weapons. Among the injured, Aminul Islam, 35, was in critical condition and sent to Dhaka for treatment; five others were taken to Rangpur and six to Rowmari Upazila Health Complex.

A house was also set on fire during the clash. Police and local residents later brought the situation under control.
Dhushmara PS OC MR Sayeed said the victim’s family filed a case on Thursday night naming 35 people as defendants. Police were trying to arrest those named.
