KHULNA, Oct 4: A regional leader of the banned extremist outfit Purba Bangla Communist Party (ML-Janajuddha) was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Dighalia Upazila of the district on Sunday.
Nasimul Gani Karim alias Nasim, 55, faced nearly a dozen charges, including multiple murder, extortion, abduction, and arms cases.
Police said two attackers arrived on a van at around noon and opened fire while Nasim was sitting at a local tea stall in the Farmaishkhana area. He was rushed to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where on-duty physicians declared him dead.
Dighalia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Howladar Sanwar Hossain Masum confirmed the incident, stating that officers recovered three live bullets and three spent cartridges from the crime scene.
Nasim, a resident of Farmaishkhana, had a long criminal record.
Khulna Superintendent of Police Sarker Omar Faruk said that law enforcement has verified records of seven active cases against Nasim, including five for murder.
Police said an autopsy will be conducted and the body handed over to the deceased’s family as legal procedures are finalised.
