Two persons were sentenced to life imprisonment in separate cases in Narayanganj and Barishal districts in two days.

NARAYANGANJ: A Narayanganj court on Wednesday sentenced Md Alamgir alias Alamgir Driver to life in prison and fined him Tk 20,000 for possessing 42,000 yaba tablets in Sonargaon Upazila of the district.

Judge Mohammad Delwar Hossain of the Narayanganj Drugs and Narcotics Control Tribunal-1 delivered the verdict in the presence of the accused. He will serve an additional six months in prison if he fails to pay the fine.

Police arrested Alamgir on January 17, 2022, after stopping a private car in the Mogorapara area based on information that a large yaba shipment was being transported from Cumilla to Dhaka. Police said they recovered 42,000 yaba tablets from a black schoolbag inside the vehicle. Another suspect fled.

Seven prosecution witnesses testified during the trial. The court convicted Alamgir based on their testimony and other evidence, prosecution lawyer Md Nazrul Islam Masum said.

BARISHAL: A court in Barishal on Tuesday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for killing his father in Wazirpur Upazila 16 years ago.

Senior District and Sessions Judge Md Sohel Ahmed also fined Palash Hawladar Tk 50,000, with an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment if he fails to pay. As Palash was absent when the verdict was delivered, the court issued an arrest warrant against him.

The court acquitted two other accused, Kawsar Hawladar and Mizan Hawladar, saying the charges against them were not proved.

According to case documents, Palash had a strained relationship with his father, Ali Akbar Hawladar, a day labourer, over family disputes. Prosecutors said Palash believed his father had instigated a case filed by his first wife under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. Palash and others allegedly took Ali Akbar from his home after an argument on May 2, 2010. The next morning, a neighbour found him tied and injured in a nearby paddy field.

Ali Akbar died at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal after being taken there from Wazirpur Upazila Health Complex. His son Shahid Hawladar filed the murder case with Wazirpur Police Station. Police later submitted a charge sheet against the three accused on March 25, 2011.
