GOPALGANJ, Oct 10: “Women are often undervalued in society because most of them do not earn an income. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman introduced family cards in the names of female household members to enhance women’s status and respect within their families and society,” said SM Jilani, MP from Gopalganj-3 (Tungipara-Kotalipara) Constituency and president of the Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal’s central committee.
The MP said these while inaugurating a two-day training programme for field-level data collectors and supervisors at the Tungipara Upazila Parishad auditorium in Gopalganj on Saturday morning. The training is part of preparations to implement the family card programme.
MP Jilani said a government he described as fascist had spent the past 17 years undermining the country’s economic foundations and siphoning off trillions of taka abroad, leaving the economy in a fragile state.
He said the government has decided to distribute family cards in phases, taking the country’s economic constraints into account.
“The elected government is running the country with a fragile economy,” Jilani said, adding that if the economy were stronger, the government could have directed that cards be distributed to all families at once. He said the economy was gradually improving under the current government’s leadership.
Tungipara Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mohammad Didarul Alam chaired the inauguration ceremony. Speakers included Officer-in-Charge of Tungipara Police Station Ayub Ali, Social Services Officer Prakash Chakraborty, Tungipara Upazila BNP President Sheikh Salauddin Ahmed, Joint General Secretary Nasir Hossain, Tungipara Municipal BNP General Secretary Jihadul Islam Babu and Organising Secretary Gopal Sarkar. Aminul Islam, member-secretary of the Jubo Dal unit, was also present.
Following the ceremony, digital tabs were distributed to the 15 data collectors and one supervisor taking part in the training.
