Five people were killed and three others injured in separate road accidents in Noakhali, Feni and Bagerhat districts in two days.
NOAKHALI: An 80-year-old woman was killed after being hit by a truck carrying concrete for road repair work in front of Rahim Uddin Jame Mosque in Habibpur Village under Ward No. 7 of Sirajpur Union in Companiganj Upazila of the district on Sunday morning.
The victim, Monija Khatun, was the widow of late Sayedul Haque of that village.
Local residents said Khatun was returning home from Habibpur Bazar when the truck hit her, leaving her dead on the spot. The driver and helper fled immediately after the crash.
Residents later detained the truck and called the national emergency service 999, prompting police to respond.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Companiganj Police Station (PS) Md Nurul Hakim said legal action would be taken if a written complaint is filed.
FENI: A Special Response Battalion (SRB) warrant officer was killed after a speeding truck crashed into him at Fatehpur on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Feni Sadar Upazila early Sunday.
Warrant Officer Mohammad Alamgir, 46, was serving on deputation from the army at SRB-7’s Feni camp.
According to highway police, an SRB team had set up a temporary checkpoint when a covered van stopped after being signalled. A speeding truck then rammed the van from behind. As the truck driver tried to flee, he swerved and struck Alamgir, who was on duty beside the road. The truck plunged into a roadside ditch, injuring the driver, Mohammad Sajib.
Alamgir was taken to Feni Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Sajib, from Bakerganj Upazila in Barishal District, was also hospitalised.
Police said the vehicles were recovered and taken into custody. Traffic on the highway is normal, and legal proceedings are underway. Alamgir’s family has been informed, and his funeral prayer will be held at the SRB headquarters in Chattogram.
BAGERHAT: Three people were killed and two others seriously injured when a motorcycle collided with a coconut-laden Nasimon on the Morrelganj-Bogi regional highway in Morrelganj Upazila of the district on Saturday evening.
The crash occurred in the Dona area when the speeding Nasimon, reportedly heading towards Kachua Signboard, collided head-on with the motorcycle. Rimon, 25, and Amin Hossain, 22, died on the spot, while Muhibullah, 16, died on the way to Morrelganj Upazila Health Complex.
Police recovered the bodies. The two injured victims were later referred to Khulna Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
Morrelganj PS OC Mohammad Shahadat Hossain said preliminary evidence suggested reckless driving and excessive speed caused the crash.
