Yemen’s Houthi rebels have launched ballistic missile and drone attacks targeting Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, and Aramco facilities in Khurais, a major oil-producing area in the country’s east.
Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree confirmed the attacks in a statement on Sunday.
In a post on social media, Saree claimed that the attacks were carried out with “high precision” and caused major fires at targeted Aramco facilities.
The attacks came shortly after Yemen’s internationally recognised government announced a new military operation against the Houthis.
Rashad al-Alimi, head of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, has vowed to retake the remaining parts of the country from Houthi control.
The armed group had earlier made strategic gains by cutting off a major supply route connecting Taiz and Aden.
The conflict, which has continued for more than a decade, has left the Houthis in control of large parts of Yemen, including the capital Sanaa.
Saudi Arabia has supported Yemen’s government since 2014, while the Houthis have received political and military backing from Iran.
The conflict has triggered one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises and continues to pose risks to the security of the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, both vital routes for global trade.
