An unidentified man died after being beaten by a mob on suspicion of cattle theft in Chaugachha upazila of Jashore.
According to locals and police, a three-member group of suspected cattle thieves entered the house of Idris Ali in Swarupdaha Union around 3:30 AM.
When the group tried to break the lock of the cowshed, the homeowner noticed the incident and raised an alarm. Hearing his cries, villagers gathered and chased the suspects.
Two of them managed to flee, while the mob caught one of the suspects and allegedly beat him.
Police from Chaugachha Police Station later rushed to the spot and rescued the man in critical condition. He was taken to the upazila health complex, where he died while undergoing treatment in the morning.
Chaugachha Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mamunur Rashid said, "the man, who was allegedly beaten by a mob on suspicion of cattle theft, died while receiving treatment."
His identity has not yet been established. Efforts are underway to identify him with the assistance of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) and Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the OC said.
