US President Donald Trump mistakenly referred to Brazil as India while commenting on Brazil’s presidential election in a social media post.
In a post on Truth Social on October 4, Trump claimed that 125 million people had voted in the “first round of India’s presidential election” and praised Brazil’s election commission for releasing results shortly after voting ended. He then criticised the US election system, saying it takes weeks to count votes.
Brazil, not India, held its presidential election first round on Sunday. India does not directly elect its president; the president is elected by an electoral college.
Trump’s post drew widespread amusement on social media, with users joking about his confusion and questioning whether he was getting enough sleep.
This is not the first time Trump has confused countries. In July, he reportedly referred to Iran as the “Islamic Republic of Japan” while discussing tensions with Tehran. He had also repeatedly referred to Greenland as “Iceland” during a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January.
