South African lawyer and judge Navi Pillay has jokingly said she might share her Nobel Peace Prize medal with US President Donald Trump after learning she had won the prestigious award.
Pillay, 85, made the remark while responding to the news of her award, which she initially struggled to believe.
When colleagues congratulated her, she joked, “If you congratulate me any more, I might share the prize with Trump.”
Trump had openly campaigned for the Nobel Peace Prize last year, but the award went to Venezuelan opposition leader and democracy activist María Corina Machado instead.
Disappointed at not receiving the prize, Trump was handed Machado’s Nobel medal in January this year.
Trump had again expressed confidence that he deserved the award this year, although he acknowledged uncertainty over whether the Nobel Committee would select him.
However, he was not among this year’s laureates. The prize was awarded to Pillay, a prominent South African lawyer and former judge.
Recalling how she learned the news, Pillay said a colleague named Christophe had called her away from her desk and told her she had won the Nobel Prize.
“I said, this must be a joke,” she recalled.
Pillay said she would need to verify the news before accepting it as true, despite the congratulations from those around her. She repeated her light-hearted remark about sharing the medal with Trump as colleagues continued to congratulate her.
