A 45-year-old man shot dead eight people, including a pregnant woman and two children, before apparently taking his own life in a mass shooting in Erie, Pennsylvania, US, police said on Saturday.
The shooting took place on Friday evening at a house on Perry Street. Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah said the suspect died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound before officers arrived at the scene.
Eight of the nine victims were family members, while the remaining victim was a family friend, Lorah said. After entering the house, the gunman reportedly came outside and shot two women who appeared distressed and were seeking help from neighbours.
Police have yet to identify the suspect or establish a motive for the shooting.
Erie Mayor Daria Devlin said police officers had arrived at a horrific scene and handled the situation with courage and professionalism under extremely difficult circumstances.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said he had spoken with the mayor and offered support following the shooting.
According to the Gun Violence Archive, the United States has recorded more than 400 mass shootings in 2026. The organisation defines a mass shooting as an incident in which four or more people are shot, excluding the shooter.
