‘Journos have key role in building equitable BD’

COX’S BAZAR, Oct 11: Information and Broadcasting Secretary Mahbuba Farjana has called for collective efforts to rebuild Bangladesh in the spirit of the July uprising, emphasising the need for an equitable, just and prosperous country.

“Young people shed their blood during the July movement. Their sacrifice can never be repaid,” she said, urging everyone to fulfil their responsibilities to meet the aspirations of those who took part in the movement. She said journalists have a crucial role to play in building a discrimination-free society.

Speaking at an exchange of views with journalists at Hilltop Circuit House in Cox’s Bazar on Saturday morning, Farjana said the government had already taken several welfare-oriented decisions for journalists and was working to improve their professional working conditions and overall well-being.

She said a dedicated information complex for journalists would be built in Cox’s Bazar soon, adding that the facility would help local journalists carry out their professional activities and access information more effectively.

Farjana also said the government was taking various measures, including amendments to cyber laws, to curb the spread of misinformation and disinformation nationwide.

Those attending the meeting included District Information Officer Abdus Sattar, Cox’s Bazar Press Club President Mahbubur Rahman and General Secretary (GS) Momtaz Uddin Bahari, journalist leaders Kamal Hossain Azad, Shamsul Haque Sharek, Ikram Chowdhury Tipu and lawyer Abu Siddiq Osmani, Cox’s Bazar Journalists Union Vice-President MR Mahbub and GS SM Zafar; and journalists MR Khokon, Moazzem Hossain Shakil, FM Sumon and Aroj Faruk, among others.
