JAMALPUR, Oct 11: A journalist of The Daily Observer, Hafizur Rahman, was allegedly attacked with machetes by a group of miscreants while returning home after work. They also vandalised his motorcycle.
The incident occurred in the Sengua area of Mahadan Union under Sarishabari Upazila of Jamalpur District early Sunday. The victim is the correspondent of The Daily Observer in Madhupur Upazila of Tangail and general secretary (GS) of Dhanbari Press Club.
Hafizur Rahman said he left Dhanbari for his rented house in Sarishabari at around 11 pm. On the way, his motorcycle broke down. Later, he reached a garage around 3 am to get it repaired.
He said that as soon as he reached the Sengua area, a pickup-van blocked his way and five to six unidentified miscreants first hacked his motorcycle and then attacked him with machetes. Hearing his cry for help, local people rushed in, forcing the attackers to flee.
He alleged that the attack was pre-planned and said preparations were underway to file a case with Sarishabari Police Station (PS) over the incident.
Dhanbari Press Club President Rafiqul Islam Swapan, Sarishabari Press Club GS and other journalist leaders expressed deep concern over the attack and strongly condemned the incident.
Officer-in-Charge of Sarishabari PS Iqbal Hossain said legal action would be taken if a case was filed.
