Iranian analyst and University of Tehran professor Seyed Mohammad Marandi has warned that a prolonged conflict with Yemen could push Saudi Arabia into a severe economic crisis and potentially halt its oil exports entirely.
Speaking on Al Mayadeen’s programme The Grand Stand-off: Iran and the World, Marandi said Saudi Arabia had already lost a great deal and could lose everything if the war continued.
He argued that Saudi Arabia’s heavy dependence on oil revenues made its economy particularly vulnerable to escalating attacks by Yemen’s Ansarullah movement. He also claimed that Yemen could intensify its strikes if Riyadh escalated the conflict.
According to Marandi, Yemen does not seek to destroy Saudi Arabia but aims to pressure Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to help end the war. He warned that further escalation could lead to a complete halt in Saudi oil exports.
Marandi also raised concerns about potential domestic instability in Saudi Arabia and uncertainty surrounding its assets, bonds and stock market investments in the United States.
He questioned whether US President Donald Trump would allow Saudi and Qatari rulers to withdraw their assets from the United States amid broader concerns over the US bond market. Marandi argued that Washington might not readily allow them to repatriate their funds.
