State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam has called for stronger UN engagement to ensure the swift and sustainable repatriation of Rohingyas to Myanmar.

She made the call at a United Nations Day celebration organised by Zonta International, District 25, and Zonta clubs in Bangladesh at a Dhaka hotel on Saturday, October 24.

Shama stressed the need for an effective UN and stronger international solidarity to address global challenges and build a peaceful and just world.

She reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to multilateralism and the UN’s three pillars of development, peace and security, and human rights, highlighting the country’s contributions to peacekeeping and peacebuilding.

She also stressed the need for international financing, technology transfer and market access to support sustainable development and Bangladesh’s LDC graduation.

On women’s empowerment, she praised Bangladeshi women in UN peacekeeping and called for action against gender-based violence and digital harassment.
