Speaking to journalists after attending a meeting of the special committee on constitutional reform at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban at 11:00AM on Saturday (October 24) , Dr Nazrul stated that any positive constitutional change must prioritize the aspirations of the July mass uprising and public expectations.

Former interim government adviser Dr Asif Nazrul has emphasized establishing a balance of power between the Prime Minister and the President, ensuring judicial independence, and reforming appointment processes for constitutional bodies during ongoing discussions on constitutional amendment.

He noted that discussions held in a cordial environment focused on creating executive checks and balances, strengthening parliamentary standing committees, and reforming judicial appointment mechanisms.

Regarding parliamentary oversight, Dr Nazrul requested that opposition members head several key standing committees to ensure accountability within parliamentary proceedings.

Expressing concern over judicial independence, Dr Nazrul voiced disappointment over the exclusion of proposed laws regarding Supreme Court judge appointments and the establishment of a Supreme Court secretariat, noting that transparent appointment procedures remain critical. In response, the Law Minister assured him that these issues have not been omitted permanently and will be addressed through future legislation.

Addressing the caretaker government system, Dr Nazrul highlighted the need for political consensus, noting that among nine proposed mechanisms outlined in the July Charter, consensus exists on eight, with disagreement remaining on one. He urged continued dialogue with opposition parties to reach a mutually acceptable resolution without stalling the reform process.
