Foreign Affairs State Minister Humayun Kabir has reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to multilateralism and meaningful reform of the United Nations Security Council, calling for dialogue, peaceful settlement of disputes and respect for international law to address global crises.

He made the remarks in a message on Saturday, October 24, marking United Nations Day.

Kabir highlighted the UN’s role in promoting global peace and security, protecting human rights, reducing poverty, addressing climate risks and expanding international cooperation. He said multilateral cooperation was essential in the face of complex global challenges.

Reaffirming Bangladesh’s commitment to the multilateral system, he stressed the need to strengthen the UN’s effectiveness through structural reforms, greater transparency and fair representation of all countries.

He said geopolitical tensions, armed conflicts, humanitarian crises and rising inequality made collective international action more important than ever. No single country could resolve all global problems alone, he added, calling for cooperation based on mutual trust and shared responsibility.

Kabir said Bangladesh wanted a UN that was more representative, transparent and effective, reflecting contemporary global realities. He also stressed the need for institutional changes to ensure fair participation by member states in decision-making and strengthen the Security Council’s ability to maintain international peace and security.

He said the government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman was committed to strengthening democratic governance, upholding human rights and the rule of law, and building accountable institutions. Bangladesh also wanted to play a responsible role internationally while respecting these values.

Kabir described the election of Bangladesh’s foreign minister as president of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly as a reflection of the country’s renewed commitment to multilateral engagement. He said the development offered an opportunity to expand Bangladesh’s international engagement and strengthen its role in global discussions.

Highlighting Bangladesh’s contribution to international peace and security, he said the country had long been among the leading contributors to UN peacekeeping operations. Bangladeshi peacekeepers continue to serve in conflict-affected and challenging environments, reflecting the country’s commitment through their professionalism and sacrifice.

He also reiterated Bangladesh’s support for greater participation of women in peacekeeping and decision-making on peace and security, saying equal participation and inclusive decision-making were important for sustainable peace.

On Bangladesh’s cooperation with the UN, Kabir cited sustainable development, disaster preparedness, poverty reduction, gender equality and humanitarian assistance as key areas of partnership. He said stronger international cooperation in these fields could support Bangladesh’s development and help achieve global development targets.

Addressing the Rohingya crisis, Kabir said Bangladesh continued to host more than 1.2 million Rohingyas forcibly displaced from Myanmar, placing significant humanitarian, economic and social pressures on the country.

He called for continued international support to ensure the safe, voluntary and sustainable repatriation of the Rohingyas to Myanmar. He also urged stronger international initiatives to find a lasting solution and create conditions conducive to their return.

On the Sustainable Development Goals, Kabir called for coordinated international efforts to implement the 2030 Agenda. He stressed the need for adequate financing, technology transfer and capacity-building support for developing countries, least developed countries and those vulnerable to climate change.

He said greater access to international financial and technical assistance was necessary to reduce development inequalities and help disadvantaged countries progress. Global decision-making, he added, should take greater account of the needs and circumstances of developing nations.

Marking United Nations Day, Kabir said the occasion served as a reminder of the enduring relevance of the UN Charter and the importance of collective action to address shared global challenges.

He urged the UN and its member states to work together to overcome divisions and mistrust, maintain dialogue and take joint action in pursuit of shared interests, saying mutual respect and cooperation were essential to building a peaceful and just world.
