Police Headquarters has clarified Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir’s remarks on crossfire, saying he used the term literally to describe the force’s resolve to enforce the law and did not refer to extrajudicial killings.
In a statement issued on Monday (October 26) evening, Police Headquarters said media reports and headlines about the IGP’s comments at the inauguration of Community Bank’s Chawkbazar Islamic Banking branch in Dhaka had drawn its attention.
The statement said the IGP did not use the term to suggest punishment outside the judicial process or extrajudicial killings.
It said Bangladesh Police, as the country’s principal law enforcement agency, is responsible for preventing crime, arresting offenders, maintaining public order and protecting people’s lives and property.
According to the statement, police faced 176 attacks in the first 10 months of this year while carrying out their duties. Four police personnel were killed and 370 seriously injured in those attacks.
Police Headquarters also cited provisions of the Penal Code 1860, the Code of Criminal Procedure 1898 and the Police Act 1861 regarding the right to self-defence.
The statement said the IGP had reaffirmed the police force’s commitment to taking effective action against drug dealers, terrorists, extortionists and other criminals posing threats to public safety.
It also clarified the IGP’s remarks about journalists, saying he had not intended to make a sweeping comment about them and that the remark had been made inadvertently.
Police Headquarters reiterated that the force remains committed to protecting lives and property and upholding the rule of law with professionalism, impartiality and respect for human rights.
