Drone destroyed over Riyadh sky

Saudi air defense forces intercepted and destroyed a drone in the skies over the Riyadh region on Saturday, according to the spokesperson for the Saudi-led military coalition fighting Yemen's Houthi rebels.

Coalition spokesperson Turki al-Malki stated on X that air defense systems successfully tracked and destroyed the aerial threat over the capital. Debris fell to the ground following the interception, but no casualties were reported.

Although Malki did not explicitly attribute the drone launch to a specific group, the incident follows a series of recent attacks against Saudi territory by Iran-backed Houthi rebels. A previous Houthi attack on Riyadh Airport forced a two-week closure and led to the cancellation of major events, threatening the kingdom's economic diversification plans.

The development follows Malki's claim on Friday that Houthis targeted Madinah—Islam's second-holiest city—a charge the rebels denied. The ongoing escalation was triggered in July when Houthis permitted an Iranian aircraft to land in Sanaa, breaching Saudi airspace restrictions, resulting in the breakdown of a fragile 2022 ceasefire and subsequent clashes across the Red Sea coast.
