Tensions flared in Kolkata as a hardline Hindu organisation attempted to surround the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission on demanding security for minorities in Bangladesh, the establishment of an independent Sanatani state and the release of Chinmoy Krishna Das.

However, police intervention prevented the protesters from reaching the main entrance of the diplomatic mission.

Members and supporters of an organisation called Bangasena took to the streets, marching from the Sealdah railway station area towards the Bangladesh mission in Park Circus.

A large number of saffron-clad people, including monks and nuns, were seen at the front of the procession. The demonstrators raised various slogans as they headed towards the mission.

As the procession approached the Deputy High Commission, Kolkata Police, which had been deployed in advance, stopped it by putting up double barricades. The protesters were halted approximately 300 yards from the mission.

A brief verbal altercation and pushing and shoving took place between police and protesters, but authorities managed to keep the situation under control. Bangasena members then staged a prolonged demonstration in front of the barricades, reiterating their demands.

The programme disrupted traffic in Park Circus and adjoining areas for some time.

As the mission was closed on Saturday, representatives of the organisation could not submit a memorandum.

Additional police personnel had been deployed in and around the Deputy High Commission in advance to prevent any untoward incident.

Notably, this was the second incident of tension outside the Bangladesh mission this month. Earlier, on October 3, members of the Nationalist Citizens Party of India and monks from Vivekananda Mission Seva Pratishthan staged a demonstration outside the mission with similar demands.

On that occasion, however, the demonstrators managed to submit a memorandum to mission officials.
