All nine people aboard a small business jet were killed after the aircraft crashed in Florida, US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed on Sunday, (November 1).
The crash occurred around 12:50 PM local time near Cresthaven, located approximately 9 miles (14 kilometers) from US President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach County.
Images from the crash site showed a crater in a residential street lined with scorch marks, with concrete fragments, wreckage, and debris scattered across the roadway.
Bahamas-Bound Jet Experienced Sudden Descent
According to a statement from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Learjet 60 had departed from Austin, Texas, and was en route to the Bahamas. Flight tracking data and media reports indicated that the aircraft was descending at several hundred feet per second shortly before impact.
Unverified dashcam footage circulating on social media captured a vehicle driving down a suburban street when the aircraft plunged almost vertically into the ground, triggering a massive fireball.
"It's shocking to watch—it looks almost like a missile coming down, followed by a huge explosion and debris everywhere," Florida Governor Ron DeSantis remarked during a press conference following the incident. He added that there were no reported casualties or injuries among residents on the ground.
Federal Agencies Launch Investigation
US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy described the incident as "deeply tragic" and announced that the FAA is dispatching a specialized team to assist the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) in leading the investigation.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the nine victims aboard the flight.
