Ten platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have been deployed in the industrial belt of Gazipur on Monday, November 2, to maintain law and order following days of escalating garment worker protests over wage hikes.

Gazipur Deputy Commissioner Md. Nurul Karim Bhuiyan confirmed the development on Monday morning, stating that the paramilitary force is operating alongside 21 Executive Magistrates.

"BGB personnel have already taken positions in the field under the leadership of executive magistrates to safeguard state assets and ensure the safety of citizens," the Deputy Commissioner stated, adding that other law enforcement agencies remain on high alert.

Highway Blockades and Violent Clashes

Protesting workers from various garment factories across Gazipur have been taking to the streets over the past few days, demanding higher wages. As part of the agitation, workers blockaded major points on the Dhaka-Tangail and Dhaka-Mymensingh highways, causing severe traffic jams and public suffering.

The ongoing demonstrations turned violent in several locations, with protesters resorting to vandalism and arson. Incidents of fire setting targeted a police box, a police vehicle, and a factory warehouse.

Repeated clashes broke out between protesters and law enforcement personnel attempting to clear the thoroughfares, leaving several individuals injured on both sides. Police have detained several suspects in connection with the violence.

Factories Announce Closures

Following the persistent unrest and rising security concerns, management authorities across several industrial units in Gazipur declared temporary factory closures.

Local administrative officials and security forces continue to monitor the industrial area closely to restore normalcy.
