Leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its associate bodies took positions at several key points along the highway in Gazipur on Monday, (November 2) to maintain traffic flow and prevent disorder amid ongoing garment worker protests.
Party members were seen stationed at various intersections from Bhogra Bypass to Naojor along the highway.
Under the leadership of Mujibur Rahman, Member of Parliament for Gazipur-1, party activists assembled along designated stretches of the highway. Concurrently, a large number of party members positioned themselves in the Konabari and Kashimpur areas led by Gazipur Metropolitan BNP President and City Corporation Administrator Shawkat Hossain Sarkar.
Reinforcements Deployed to Restore Normalcy
The political presence comes alongside heightened security measures across Gazipur's industrial belt. Following the initial deployment of five platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), an additional five platoons were brought in on Monday to reinforce law enforcement efforts.
The movement follows severe disruptions on Sunday morning when readymade garment (RMG) workers blockaded the Dhaka-Tangail highway demanding a minimum monthly wage of Tk 30,000. Traffic remained halted for nearly six and a half hours before police and BGB forces managed to clear the road around 2:30 PM.
Party sources stated that the BNP leaders and activists took positions along the major thoroughfares to minimize public inconvenience and assist in preserving law and order amid the ongoing industrial tension.
