The release of Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman faces no further legal hurdle after the Appellate Division's Chamber Court on Monday declined to stay his bail in a case filed over disorder at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
The Chamber Judge Court, led by Justice Md Rezaul Haque, issued a 'no order' after hearing a state petition seeking a stay on the interim bail granted to Akhtaruzzaman by the High Court on Sunday (November 1).
His lawyer, Mohammad Shishir Monir, confirmed the development, saying there was no longer any legal obstacle to his client's release.
Akhtaruzzaman was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police from his residence in the Cantonment DOHS area on October 2. The case was filed on October 1 over allegations of creating disorder at the airport over a shortage of luggage trolleys, obstructing government work and assaulting an on-duty security official.
He was initially remanded for one day after being produced before a court. After failing to secure bail from the lower court, he moved the High Court.
Akhtaruzzaman, a former BNP lawmaker from Kishoreganj-2, was elected to parliament in 1991 and 1996. He was expelled from the BNP for the fifth time in February 2022 over alleged activities against party discipline. He later joined Jamaat-e-Islami on December 13, ahead of the 13th parliamentary election.
