The government has amended the Road Transport Rules, 2022, to remove regulatory complications over installing front number plates and displaying registration numbers on motorcycles.

The revised rules allow changes to the design, size, letter height and number arrangement of motorcycle front number plates, making it easier to install them in line with the structure and design of different models.

The amended rules were issued through a notification signed by Al-Amin Md Nurul Islam, deputy secretary of the Road Transport and Highways Division. The notification was published in an extraordinary issue of the Bangladesh Gazette on 1 November and took immediate effect.

Issued under Section 122 of the Road Transport Act, 2018, the notification amends the provisions on motorcycle number plates under Rule 36 of the Road Transport Rules, 2022.

Under the revised provisions, motorcycle registration numbers may be displayed on the front plate in a single line, alongside the existing format.

The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has also been given the authority to determine different features of front number plates in accordance with motorcycle designs and structures.

The authority may specify the height of letters, including those indicating the district or region and the vehicle category. It may also determine the amount of vertical spacing on the plate, the distance between two numbers and the length of the hyphen between numbers on the second line.

The revised rules also allow the registration mark to be displayed on a single line, with hyphens of a prescribed length after the letters indicating the district or region and the vehicle category.

The use of reverse retro-reflective plates for displaying front registration numbers has also been included in the amended provisions.

The notification further removes the words “motorcycles and” from sub-rule (10) of Rule 36.

The amendment clarifies the authority's scope to determine the design and format of motorcycle front number plates. It also provides a regulatory basis for the BRTA to issue necessary instructions and take implementation measures.

A relevant official of the Road Transport and Highways Ministry told BSS that bringing motorcycles under camera surveillance had become necessary to restore discipline on the roads, alongside other vehicles.
