Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General Maulana Abdul Halim has accused the government of betraying the nation by rejecting the outcome of the referendum.
He made the remarks at a meeting of party leaders and activists organised by Gaibandha district Jamaat at the district party office on Friday (November 6).
During the programme, Abdul Halim administered the oath of office to newly elected Gaibandha district Jamaat Ameer MP Md Abdul Karim for the 2027–28 term.
Halim said three long marches had been successfully organised to press home the party's seven-point demands, adding that the programmes had conveyed a clear message that the 11-party alliance, particularly Jamaat-e-Islami, remained active in speaking for the people.
He said the public response to the long marches had strengthened their belief that people in Bangladesh were waiting for a Jamaat victory in the coming days.
Referring to criticism over the timing of the long marches, he said the programmes were organised in response to the rejection of the referendum verdict.
He alleged that those who had become members of parliament and ministers through the referendum had subsequently disregarded its outcome.
Halim said the party feared no power other than Allah and would continue to stand beside the people. He warned that people would take to the streets to press for their legitimate demands if the referendum verdict was not implemented.
Addressing the ongoing unrest in the garment sector, he expressed deep sorrow over the death of a garment worker named Taufiq during the violence and condemned the incident.
He also expressed condolences to the deceased worker's family, adding that the Jamaat Ameer had personally spoken to the family.
Halim said workers' legitimate demands must be met and called for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing protests.
He said violence was unacceptable and demanded the immediate arrest and punishment of those involved in Taufiq's killing.
He also called for appropriate measures to resolve the workers' movement.
