
SATKHIRA, Jan 4: Nomination papers of ten candidates, including a leader of the Awami League, two rebel candidates of the BNP and one candidate of the Jatiya Party, have been rejected in four parliamentary constituencies of Satkhira.
Meanwhile, nomination papers of eight candidates backed by Jamaat and BNP have been found valid.
The decision was announced by District Returning Officer and Deputy Commissioner Afroza Akhter after scrutiny of nomination papers from 9 am to 3 pm on Saturday at the office of the District Returning Officer.
According to the Returning Officer's office, the nomination paper of independent candidate SM Mujibur Rahman alias Sardar Mujib, general secretary of the banned Awami League-affiliated organization Sainik League, was cancelled in Satkhira-1 constituency due to irregularities in voter signatures.
In Satkhira-2 constituency, the nomination paper of Sheikh Matlub Hossain was cancelled for failing to submit a copy of the party nomination signed by the Secretary General of the Election Commission recognized Jatiya Party.
In Satkhira-3 constituency, nomination papers of independent candidates and BNP rebels BNP Central Committee Member Dr Shahidul Alam, Aslam Al Mehdi and Md Asafuddoula Khan were rejected due to discrepancies in voter signatures. In addition, the nomination paper of Waez Quruni, candidate of Islami Andolan Bangladesh (IAB), was cancelled for not signing the affidavit.
In Satkhira-4 constituency, the nomination paper of independent and BNP rebel candidate Md Abdul Wahed, former president of Shyamnagar Upazila BNP, was rejected due to irregularities in voter signatures. In the same constituency, nomination papers of Hossain Md Mayaz were cancelled for not having a valid Jatiya Party nomination, that of HM Golam Reza of Gono OdhikarParishad (GOP) for being a loan defaulter, and that of Md Abdur Rashid of the Jatiya Party for being a utility bill defaulter.
DC Afroza Akhter said, a total of 29 candidates had submitted nomination papers in the four parliamentary constituencies of Satkhira. Of them, nomination papers of 10 candidates have been rejected. The rejected candidates will have the opportunity to appeal, while nomination papers of the remaining 19 candidates have been declared valid.
