TANGAIL, Jan 4: On the second day of scrutiny for the 13th national parliamentary election, a total of 19 candidates contesting four constituencies in Tangail had their nomination papers rejected.
The verification process took place on Saturday from 10 am to 3:30 pm at the office of the Deputy Commissioner (DC) and the Returning Officer.
Following the review, Tangail DC and Returning Officer Sharifa Haque announced the cancellations. The event was attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Sanjay Kumar Mohanta, Senior District Election Officer Mohammad Tajul Islam, and officials from various departments.
According to the DC's office, in Tangail-5 (Sadar), nominations of five candidates were rejected: Khandakar Zakir Hossain of Islami Andolan Bangladesh (IAB), Fatema Akter Bithi of Ganasanghati Andolan, Hasrat Khan Bhashani of Bangladesh Supreme Party, Hasanat Al Amin of Khelafat Majlish, and independent candidate Md. Sanowar Hossain. Meanwhile, six candidates, including BNP nominee Sultan Salauddin Tuku, Jamaat-e-Islami's Ahsan Habib, BNP rebel (independent) Advocate Farhad Iqbal, and Jatiya Party's Mozammel Haque, had their nominations approved.
In Tangail-6 (Nagarpur and Delduar), five out of 12 candidates were disqualified. These included independent candidates Jewel Sarkar, Ripon Mia, Shariful Islam, Saifur Rahman, and Jatiya Party's Md. Mamunur Rahim. Seven candidates, including BNP's Robiul Awal Lovlu, Jamaat-e-Islami's AKM Abdul Hamid, GOP's Mohammad Kabir Hossain, and IAB's Md. Akhi Nur Mia, were cleared.
In Tangail-7 (Mirzapur), three of six candidates were rejected: ATM Rezal Karim Al Razi of IAB, independent Firoz Haider Khan, and Khelafat Majlish's Md. Abu Taher. BNP's Abul Kalam Siddiqui, Jamaat's Abdullah Ibne Abul Hossain, and Bangladesh Republican Party's Md. Tofazzal Hossain had valid nominations.
In Tangail-8 (Bashail-Sakhipur), six out of 10 candidates were disqualified. These include Awal Mahmud of Bangladesh Revolutionary Workers Party, independent candidate Abul Fazal Mahmudul Haque, SM Habibur Rahman, Habibur Rahman Kamal, Md. Alamgir Hossain of the Amjonota Party, and Khelafat Majlis's Md. Shahidul Islam. The nominations of BNP's Advocate Ahmed Azam Khan, independent Salauddin Alamgir, Jatiya Party's Md. Nazmul Hasan, and Jamaat-e-Islami's Md. Shafiqul Islam Khan were accepted.
Tangail DC and Returning Officer Sharifa Haque said that today's second-phase scrutiny focused on verifying nomination papers for four parliamentary seats. "Due to inconsistencies in the information provided and other reasons, the nomination papers of 19 candidates have been rejected," she added.
