Dhaka’s response to Mustafizur–IPL row ‘robust and appropriate’: Advisers

Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed and Energy Adviser Dr Fouzul Kabir Khan stated on Tuesday that Bangladesh’s response to the controversy involving cricketer Mustafizur Rahman and Indian Premier League (IPL) has been 'robust and appropriate,' dismissing fears of any economic or commercial fallout.

Speaking to reporters after meetings of Advisers Council Committee on Economic Affairs and the Advisers Council Committee on Government Purchase at the Secretariat, Dr Salehuddin said the suspension of IPL broadcasts in Bangladesh should not be viewed through an economic or trade lens.

“There has been no impact at all on our economy,” he said, adding that government procurement, international tenders and financial decisions remain transparent and independent.
“This issue was not even discussed in our meetings. There is no connection between sports-related matters and our economic decisions.”

Dr Salehuddin stressed that the controversy did not originate from Bangladesh, noting that Mustafizur Rahman is a globally recognised player and a sporting ambassador of the country.

“He was selected purely on merit for technical reasons. Suddenly restricting him from playing and then suspending broadcasts is unfortunate and regrettable for both countries,” he said.

He cautioned against politicising sports, urging restraint to prevent unnecessary escalation. “History shows that even during political tensions, sports continued. We do not want this issue to aggravate bilateral relations.”

Echoing the same view, Energy Adviser Dr Fouzul Kabir Khan said the government’s stance was proportionate and justified. “There is always an action and a reaction. When a Bangladeshi player is called and then suddenly withdrawn, a response is expected. I believe the response was proper, robust and appropriate,” he said.

Fouzul Kabir said Bangladesh’s position on IPL broadcasting and discussions around venue changes for upcoming international tournaments sent a clear but measured signal. He added that concerns had also been raised within India about politicising sports, referring to comments by Indian parliamentarian Shashi Tharoor.

Reiterating the government’s position, Dr Salehuddin said Bangladesh had not taken retaliatory steps but responded in a balanced manner. “Bangladesh did not initiate anything. A top player was suddenly restricted. Our response was completely robust and entirely appropriate.”

Both advisers underscored that Bangladesh remains committed to maintaining constructive relations with India, emphasising that sports, trade and diplomacy should continue without unnecessary disruption.
