NALITABARI, SHERPUR, Jan 15: The candidacy of BNP-nominated Engineer Fahim Chowdhury for Sherpur-2 (Nakla-Nalitabari) constituency in the 13th parliamentary election has been suspended by the Appellate Division.

On Monday, during the third day of hearings at the Election Commission building in Dhaka, officials announced that Fahim's nomination was withheld as he failed to produce required documents proving renunciation of his Australian citizenship.

Earlier, on January 3, the district returning officer had suspended and later cancelled his nomination citing dual citizenship in Bangladesh and Australia.

Fahim appealed on January 9 to reinstate his candidacy. However, the Appellate Division maintained the suspension after he again failed to submit proof of relinquishing foreign nationality.

The Election Commission has now given Fahim until January 16 to provide the necessary documents. If he fails to comply, his nomination will be permanently cancelled.
