PANCHAGARH, Jan 27: Rabiul Islam Khattak, father of Sagar who was martyred in Panchagarh during the July 2024 Mass Movement, has urged the public to vote for the sheaf of rice symbol in the upcoming national election.
He stated this was essential to restore the country's democracy, voting rights, and the people's fair rights.
He made these remarks while addressing a roadshow for BNP candidate Barrister Muhammad Nowshad Jamir in Panchagarh Sadar Upazila on Monday evening. The event was held at Ratnibari Bazar in Chaklahat Union.
At the outset, he paid deep respect to all the July Movement martyrs. He said, "My son Sagar did not give his life for any person or party. He gave his life to establish the right to vote for the people of the country. Today, that right is under threat again."
He stated, "For a long time, the people have not been able to vote. Elections now mean panic and uncertainty. To get rid of this, the people must unite and take a stand for pro-democracy forces." He added, "If we do not want to be dishonest with the blood of the martyrs, we must vote for the ears of rice."
The BNP-nominated candidate, Barrister Muhammad Nowshad Jamir, addressed the rally as the main speaker. He said, "The martyrs of the July Movement have left us a debt-the debt of restoring democracy. To repay this, we must ensure free, fair, and participatory elections."
He further said, "If the people of Panchagarh vote for the Paddy Sheaf, the dignity of the martyrs' blood will be protected. Bangladesh will then return to the path of democracy." He added that the sacrifice of youths like Shaheed Sagar was the strength of their fight and the country would not accept fascist rule.
Local BNP leaders present said, the July Movement martyrs showed the way to restore democracy. They asserted the people of Panchagarh would never forget Sagar's sacrifice and called for united work to implement the movement's spirit.
Leaders and activists of the BNP and its affiliated organisations, students, the general public, and members of the martyr's family attended the roadshow.
