RAJSHAHI, Feb 16: The central Shaheed Minar in Rajshahi is awaiting its inauguration. For the first time, a central Shaheed Minar has been constructed in the district.
The central Shaheed Minar has been built on the site of the old Survey Institute in Rajshahi, covering a pre-determined area of approximately one acre.
Milon, a resident of Rajshahi, said that people currently go to Rajshahi College to pay their respects to the language martyrs by placing flowers. This causes significant hardship for everyone. With this new monument, the long-standing expectation of Rajshahi's residents is about to be fulfilled.
It has been informed by the Zila Parishad that the construction work of the Rajshahi Central Shaheed Minar in the metropolis has already been completed. Now, only the official inauguration is awaited. The central Shaheed Minar has been constructed on the initiative of the Zilla Parishad at a cost of approximately Tk 7 crore and 80 lakh. Previously, on 16 December 2020, the foundation stone of the central Shaheed Minar was laid under the management of Rajshahi City Corporation. On that day, the foundation stone was officially laid by Golam Arif Tipu, the then chief prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal and a language veteran and freedom fighter from Rajshahi.
The city dwellers hope that this central Shaheed Minar, embodying the spirit of the language movement, will become an important symbol of respect, remembrance and inspiration for future generations.
On Monday, Umme Fatima, Chief Executive Officer of Rajshahi Zilla Parishad, informed that a views-exchange meeting has been arranged regarding this on Tuesday. A decision may be taken to open the central Shaheed Minar to the public on Language Day.
However, the district administration will oversee the matters of publicity and the inauguration.
