Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee has announced that the government will launch a countrywide canal excavation programme within the next 180 days as part of efforts to strengthen water management and regional development.

The state minister made the announcement while speaking to journalists after a views-exchange meeting with district administration officials, police and Water Development Board (WDB) officials at Circuit House in Lakshmipur on Friday morning.

He said a detailed implementation plan is being finalised, including specific dates for the excavation work, to ensure the project is carried out in a coordinated and disciplined manner.

Anee noted that the initiative aligns with directives issued by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at a recent cabinet meeting.

According to the state minister, the Prime Minister instructed the cabinet to prioritise improving law and order, stabilising prices of essential commodities ahead of Ramadan and maintaining momentum in regional development projects nationwide.

“We are working diligently in line with the Prime Minister’s instructions to ensure uninterrupted public services and balanced regional growth,” he said.

Addressing local concerns in Lakshmipur, the minister pledged swift action to tackle key water resource challenges in the district. He announced that excavation of the Bhulua River and Rahmat Khali Canal would be given priority to improve drainage and irrigation facilities.

He also said river erosion in the region would be addressed through a phased prevention strategy and reiterated his commitment to developing local road infrastructure as previously promised.

Upon his arrival at the Circuit House, the minister was received by District Commissioner SM Mehedi Hasan and Superintendent of Police Abu Tareq and was accorded a formal guard of honour.

In his role as Joint Secretary General of the BNP, Anee also held discussions with party leaders and activists, highlighting coordination between administrative responsibilities and political engagement.

Senior district officials, including the deputy director of local government and Lakshmipur municipality administrator Md Jasim Uddin, were present at the meeting.
