Four sentenced to jail in anti-drug drive in Morelganj

Four people were sentenced to different terms of imprisonment and fined after being detained during an anti-drug operation in Morelganj upazila of Bagerhat on Monday (August 10).

The operation was conducted in Hoglapasha Union and Morelganj Municipality areas in the afternoon on allegations of drug sale and consumption. Later, a mobile court sentenced the four detainees to different terms of non-custodial imprisonment and fined them Tk 1,000 each.

The operation was conducted with assistance from the Department of Narcotics Control, Bagerhat. Morelganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Executive Magistrate of the mobile court Md Habibullah confirmed the matter.

The detainees were identified as Jesmin Akter of Hoglapasha, and Mehdi Hasan Sajib, Abdur Rahman and Siraj Sheikh of Sankibhanga. Jesmin was sentenced to six months in jail, while the other three were each sentenced to two months in jail.

The court also fined each of them Tk 1,000. In default of payment, each will have to serve an additional 14 days in jail.
