GOPALGANJ, Mar 8: A vast sandbar that has emerged in the middle of the Madhumati River, flowing between Gopalganj and Narail, has quickly become a major tourist attraction, drawing thousands of visitors daily. Locals have affectionately named the sandy expanse 'Mini Cox's Bazar' due to its resemblance to the country's famous sea beach.
Located about 25 kilometres from Gopalganj District town near Char Matla ferry ghat, the sandbar has gained widespread attention, particularly through social media, where photos and videos showcasing its natural beauty have gone viral. Visitors from surrounding districts, including Gopalganj and Narail, as well as more distant areas, are now flocking to the site in growing numbers.
The sandbar stretches across the middle of the river and presents a striking natural landscape. During high tide, the area remains submerged, but as the tide recedes, a vast stretch of white sand gradually emerges. From afar, the sandy terrain surrounded by blue water creates the illusion of a sea beach, reminiscent of Cox's Bazar, although without the ocean waves.
Visitors gather throughout the day, with the number increasing significantly during afternoons and weekends. Many spend hours walking along the sandy surface, playing football, taking photographs, or simply enjoying the peaceful environment. The site becomes particularly scenic during sunset, when golden sunlight reflects across the sand and river, creating a picturesque view.
Many visitors say the sandbar offers a rare recreational opportunity close to home. Those unable to travel to distant coastal areas find the location an attractive alternative. Families, groups of friends, and young visitors are among the most frequent tourists.
Dr Shyam Chandra Roy, livestock officer of Lohagara Upazila in Narail, who visited the sandbar with his wife, said the location exceeded his expectations. "We saw photos on social media and decided to visit. It is a beautiful and peaceful place, ideal for spending quality time," he said.
A visitor from Chitalmari in Bagerhat said he was impressed by the unique setting. "It feels like a sea beach, but it is in the middle of a river. We came with our family and enjoyed the experience," he said.
The growing influx of tourists has created new economic opportunities for local residents. Small shops have been set up along the riverbank, selling tea, drinks, snacks, and locally made products. Shopkeepers said their daily income has increased significantly since the site became popular.
Boat and trawler operators are also benefiting, as visitors must cross the river to reach the sandbar. Trawler driver Yasin Molla said passenger numbers have risen sharply. "Previously, very few people used this route. Now, hundreds of visitors cross the river every day, and our earnings have increased," he said.
To ensure visitor safety, local volunteers have formed a committee to monitor the area and assist tourists. They are advising visitors on safe movement and urging them to maintain cleanliness and protect the natural environment.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Kaushik Ahmed recently visited the site and said the administration is closely monitoring the situation. "We are taking necessary steps to ensure visitor safety. Measures are in place for emergency response in case of accidents," he said.
Locals expect the number of visitors to increase further during the upcoming Eid holidays. Many believe that with proper planning, infrastructure, and management, the sandbar could develop into a well-known tourist destination.
The emergence of the sandbar has transformed the once-quiet river area into a vibrant recreational spot, offering both economic benefits for locals and a new attraction for visitors seeking natural beauty and relaxation.
