RAJBARI, Aug 8: State Minister for Cultural Affairs Ali Newaz Mahmud Khaiyam has said extremist fundamentalist and fanatical tendencies are on the rise in society, posing a threat to the country’s democratic and secular values.

He said everyone must play a role in building a liberal democratic state by shunning divisive politics.

“While our government is firmly committed to implementing its electoral pledges, various conspiracies have begun at home and abroad. The rise of extremist fundamentalism is one of them,” he said.

“We want Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, Christians and people from all communities to live together under one roof in harmony. All of us must remain vigilant against social conflicts,” he added.

The state minister was speaking at a scholarship distribution ceremony organised by the Rajbari District Council at the Rajbari Municipal Auditorium on Friday evening.

A total of 91 students received scholarships at the event, chaired by Rajbari District Council Administrator Md Abdus Salam.

Deputy Commissioner Afroza Parvin, Superintendent of Police Mohammad Manzur Morshed, Additional Deputy Commissioner Tarif-ul Hasan and District Council Executive Officer Humayun Kabir, among others, attended the programme.
