3 to die for Jamalpur gang rape

A Jamalpur court on Wednesday sentenced three men to death for gang-raping a housewife after tying her husband to a tree in Sadar upazila about two and a half years ago.

Jamalpur Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 Judge Muhammad Abdur Rahim delivered the verdict at noon. The court also fined each of the convicts Tk 1 lakh.

The convicts are identified as Md Faruk Hossain, Munsur Ali and Ferdous Hossain, all residents of Pakulya Moddhopada village under Jamalpur Sadar upazila. All three remain absconding.

Another accused, Zahidul Islam, from the same area, was acquitted due to lack of evidence.

According to Public Prosecutor (PP) Advocate Fazlul Haque, the incident took place on the night of July 19, 2023, in Pakulya area of Sadar upazila. The accused tied the victim’s husband to a tree and then gang raped the woman.

Following the incident, the victim filed a case with Jamalpur Sadar Police Station next day.

After the testimony of four witnesses, the court sentenced three to death and acquitted one in absence of the accused.
