A police sub-inspector (SI) and a man accompanying him were allegedly assaulted by locals in Narayanganj city on Sunday afternoon.

The incident occurred around 5:00 PM near the railway line in front of Thankapor Market, between Golachipa and Alam Khan Lane.

According to eyewitnesses, SI Mizan from Narayanganj Railway Station Police Outpost had detained a hosiery worker named Ramzan and another man while accompanied by a source. The officer reportedly attempted to put them in a CNG-run auto-rickshaw and handcuff them.

As the detained men shouted for help, nearby traders and locals rushed to the scene and surrounded the group.

When locals asked for identification, the person accompanying the SI allegedly claimed to be a member of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), which further raised suspicion among the crowd.

Later, the duo were taken to an office inside Thankapor Market for questioning. However, they allegedly failed to clearly confirm their identities, prompting angry locals to suspect them of being fake law enforcers.

At one stage, crowd allegedly assaulted the SI and the accompanying man. During the incident, the officer’s clothes were torn and he reportedly left the scene to escape further assault.

Meanwhile, the detained hosiery worker Ramzan claimed that he and his colleague had come to the market for shopping when they were suddenly detained by police without explanation and were about to be handcuffed.

Narayanganj Additional Superintendent of Police (Operations and Crime) Tarek Al Mehdi said that they had sent officers to the spot to investigate.

“We are looking into the circumstances under which the incident occurred and the reasons behind it,” added the SI.
