A storm wreaked havoc on two villages in Alamdanga upazila of Chuadanga district on Wednesday night, leaving an elderly man dead and causing widespread damages.

The deceased was identified as Akman Ali, 70. He was killed after a wall collapsed on him during the storm, according to local sources.

Several others sustained minor injuries though the exact number could not be confirmed immediately.

At least 20 houses were partially or completely damaged, while many trees were uprooted and electric poles were affected, disrupting power supply in several areas.

On information, personnel from Alamdanga Fire Service and Civil Defence rushed to the spot and carried out rescue operations, removing fallen trees and clearing roads.

At least 50 families have been left homeless due to the storm and rain.

Officer-in-Charge of Alamdanga Police Station Bani Israel and Hardi Union Parishad Chairman Ashikuzzaman Oltu visited the affected areas at night.

Abdullah Al Mamun, in-charge of Alamdanga Fire Service and Civil Defence, said they began rescue work immediately after receiving the information and cleared debris from the roads.

The extent of damage will be assessed later, he said.

Alamdanga Upazila Nirbahi Officer Panna Akter said officials from the fire service and power department are working in the area.

She said upazila administration has assured financial assistance for the affected families.
