Chhatra Dal rally in Char Fasson over alleged irregularities in Family Card census recruitment

Leaders and activists of the Char Fasson upazila unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal staged a protest rally on Thursday evening, alleging irregularities, nepotism and corruption in the recruitment of data collectors and supervisors for the ongoing Family Card census in the upazila.
The protest came after the final recruitment list was published, triggering anger among unsuccessful candidates and local residents. Criticism of the recruitment process and demands for cancellation of the list have also spread across local social media groups and personal Facebook accounts.
The procession began at Fashion Square in Char Fasson in the evening and ended at the upazila parishad premises, where protesters chanted slogans.
Unsuccessful candidates and Chhatra Dal activists alleged that the government had instructed authorities to give preference to highly educated candidates and those with previous experience in digital censuses or survey activities conducted by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS). They claimed, however, that candidates without relevant experience were included in the final list while qualified applicants were excluded.
The protesters also questioned the transparency of the selection process. Some alleged that candidates who lacked the ability to operate digital tablets were selected despite the census work requiring data collection through tablets and online systems.
Several unsuccessful candidates called for immediate cancellation of the disputed list and a fresh evaluation of all applicants.
Local resident Shahadat Hossain Sujon alleged that people affiliated with a banned organisation had been included in the recruitment list and called for an investigation. Another local resident, Jahangir Alam, also demanded an inquiry into the preparation of the list and action against those responsible if irregularities are found.
Saiful Islam Rubel, a candidate who took part in the recruitment examination, said he had previous experience working in census activities and with a private development organisation, but was not selected despite having participated in the examination. Chhatra Dal activists also alleged that political influence had affected the recruitment process.
Upazila Chhatra Dal convener Arif Farazi said names of meritorious students and Chhatra Dal activists had been recommended from the union level, but many of them were not included in the final list, prompting the protest.
However, Upazila Social Services Officer Mamun Hossain denied the allegations. He said the list had been prepared strictly according to the rules and on the basis of merit through a coordinated process involving all members of the selection committee.
"There was no opportunity for anyone to gain personal benefit or commit irregularities in the process," he said.
Meanwhile, local residents and job seekers have demanded that the recruitment process be suspended immediately and that the candidates be re-evaluated under the direct supervision of the district administration.
