A college student was shot dead by unidentified assailants who stormed his house in Bagerhat’s Chitalmari upazila on Thursday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Amir Hamza, 23, son of Ruhul Amin Munshi, a resident of Shibpur village in the upazila. He was a first-year honours student at Khulna Government Sundarban College and also worked at a diagnostic centre.

According to police and family sources, the incident occurred around 4:00 PM while Amir Hamza was standing in the yard talking with his father and uncle.

At that time, six youths riding three motorcycles entered the premises wearing helmets and introduced themselves as police.

As Amir Hamza attempted to flee, he fell near a canal bank. The assailants then shot him in the head, ensuring his death before fleeing the scene.

Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to Bagerhat General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

District Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Md Shamim Hossain said multiple law enforcement units, including police, CID, PBI and the Detective Branch, have launched a coordinated effort to identify and arrest those involved.

Earlier on March 7, a youth named Nur Islam, 27, was found with gunshot wounds near the Dhaka-Khulna highway in Mollahat upazila. A week later, on March 14, businessman Sohag Sheikh, 42, was shot dead while returning home from a market in the same upazila. Police have yet to make any arrests in that case.
