TANGAIL, Apr 4: Tangail is abuzz with excitement as the district prepares to host the pilot launch of the nationwide 'Krishak Card' distribution programme.

The rollout will begin on Pahela Baishakh, with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman scheduled to inaugurate the initiative at Shaheed Maruf Stadium on April 14.

On Friday, State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock and BNP Publicity Secretary Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, MP, visited the venue and briefed reporters. He said the programme marks a 'historic step' for farmers in an agriculture-dependent country like Bangladesh. "Launching the Krishak Card on Pahela Baishakh in Tangail is a matter of pride and joy for the people here," he added.

Senior officials including Agriculture Secretary Rafiqul E Mohammad, SSF Director General Major General Mahbubus Samad Chowdhury, Dhaka Divisional Commissioner Sharaf Uddin Ahmad Chowdhury, Tangail Deputy Commissioner Sharifa Haque, and Superintendent of Police Muhammad Shamsul Alam Sarkar accompanied the minister during the visit.

The minister noted that residents have welcomed the event with enthusiasm. Preparations are underway to receive the Prime Minister, with Baishakhi fairs, agricultural exhibitions, and cultural programmes planned. Renowned artistes are expected to perform.

Earlier, a preparatory meeting was held at the Tangail DC's conference room, chaired by DC Sharifa Haque. Security and logistical arrangements were reviewed, with Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Sanjay Kumar Mohanto presenting the overall plan. Officials from various departments shared their inputs, while the minister instructed agencies to carry out their responsibilities diligently.

Officials said the Prime Minister will personally hand over Krishak Card to 15 farmers during the event. He will also inaugurate Baishakhi celebration at the municipal ground and open the agricultural fair at the outer stadium. Later, he will visit the grave of Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani to offer prayers.

The Tangail launch will coincide with similar inaugurations in nine other locations across the country. Under the pilot project, farmers in these areas will receive the Krishak Card, which will gradually be extended nationwide.
