Those in power tend to forget their commitments: AB Party Chairman

Amar Bangladesh (AB) Party Chairman Mohammad Mojibur Rahman Monju has cautioned that those in power tend to forget their commitments once elected, recalling how fundamental reforms and historical democratic milestones are often overlooked.

Speaking at a protest rally in front of central Shaheed Minar in Feni on Saturday, Monju said, “Today, 11 of our proposed ordinances, which were essential for fundamental reforms, have been ignored. We have long understood that once in power, you will forget everything. You have forgotten how Ziaur Rahman entered country’s political scene through a referendum and now you question the very legitimacy of such votes.”

He also addressed BNP, stating, “You have forgotten that after Sheikh Hasina’s exile, President gave the first order for Khaleda Zia’s release. Where was legality then? Where was the constitution?”

The rally, organized by Feni district AB Party to protest the withdrawal of a proposal for establishing a medical college, rising tidal surges and mismanagement of the energy crisis, was attended by district and local leaders, including district convener Ahsan Ullah Master and member secretary Fazlul Haque, with central co-organizing secretary Engineer Shah Alam Badal as a special guest.

Monju further emphasized that establishing a medical college in Feni is entirely feasible using existing facilities at Feni Sadar Hospital, which could be gradually upgraded to a 500-bed medical college.

He criticized government inaction over rising tidal surges, noting that local authorities have become embroiled in disputes rather than assisting vulnerable citizens.

On the energy crisis, he highlighted inconsistencies in government messaging, which he said has created unnecessary panic among the public.

Other speakers at the rally included Feni Sadar Upazila convener Shahadat Hossain Bhuiya, Feni municipality convener Abul Kalam Azad Selim, joint secretary Kamrul Islam, Nazrul Islam Shobuj, district student wing secretary Raihan Rafsan and rural physician Abdus Salam.
