National Parliament Whip and Khulna-3 MP Rokibul Islam Bakul has said the BNP government is committed to working for the welfare of people who were victims of enforced disappearances, killings and inhuman torture.

He made the remarks on Saturday while addressing a cheque distribution programme organised by the Khulna District Council, where financial assistance was provided to affected families.

The event, held in an emotional atmosphere, saw cheques distributed among 73 families from Khulna city and district, including 23 families of killed individuals and 50 families of those injured or suffering from long-term effects of torture.

The programme was chaired by Khulna District Council administrator and acting member secretary of district BNP SM Monirul Hasan Bappi, while chief executive officer Md Mominur Rahman conducted the session.

In his statement, Bakul alleged that a “culture of disappearances and killings” had prevailed across the country over the past 17 years to suppress dissenting voices. He said the current situation reflects a people's regained freedom achieved through sacrifices.

He emphasised that the financial assistance was not an act of charity but the rightful entitlement of the victims’ families. “Those responsible for disappearances and killings will be brought to justice and accountability will be ensured on this soil,” he said.

Bakul also criticised the previous administration, alleging that constitutional institutions had been weakened and district councils turned into centres of corruption. He expressed optimism that such institutions are now being restored to serve public welfare.

Speakers at the event praised the initiative and reaffirmed their commitment to supporting affected families and building an equitable “new Bangladesh”.

A total of Tk 7.36 lakh was distributed among the beneficiaries during the programme.

Among others, MPs Azizul Bari Helal (Khulna-4) and former MP Nazrul Islam Monju, along with local political and civic leaders, were present.
