A member of United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Khagrachhari on Wednesday, reportedly over a dispute related to group supremacy.

The deceased was identified as Newton Chakma, 47, a resident of Rangamati district.

According to Khagrachhari Sadar Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Md. Kai Kislu, a group of around eight attackers entered Newton’s house at Akbari area along the Khagrachhari"Rangamati road at about 9:30 AM and opened fire, killing him on the spot.

Following the incident, leaders of rival factions traded blame. Angya Marma alleged involvement of an opposing group, while Amar Joety Chakma rejected the claim.
