Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have arrested former Jubo Dal leader Moin Uddin, also known as Moin, alongwith six of his associates in connection with an alleged extortion attempt at Center for Kidney Diseases and Urology Hospital (CKDU Hospital) in the capital's Shyamoli area.

The information was confirmed on Monday (April 13) by Wing Commander MZM Entekhab Chowdhury, Director of RAB’s Legal and Media Wing.

In a message, RAB said they arrested prime accused Moin Uddin Moin and six other individuals from different areas in connection with the extortion case.

On April 11, Dr Kamrul Islam, who runs the Centre for Kidney Diseases & Urology (CKDU) Hospital, alleged that a man identifying himself as a Jubo Dal activist attempted to extort Tk 5 lakh from him, interfered with hospital operations and threatened staff members.

In the case statement, he mentioned that Moin and his associates had been demanding Tk 5 lakh for a long time. ''When I expressed my inability to pay the demanded extortion, the accused have been threatening me in various ways. In continuation of this, on the morning of April 10, they came to my house on Shyamoli Road No. 3 under Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station and asked me to open the door.''

''When my wife opened the door, accused Moin told my wife that they have to pay them Tk 5 lakh now. He threatened to cause various kinds of harm to me and my wife if I did not pay the money. When my wife refused to pay the extortion money, the accused started behaving unruly and shouting.''

The physician also claimed that police present at the scene did not take action.

The situation later calmed following the intervention of central BNP leaders.
