A four-year-old child drowned after falling into a pond in Mymensingh’s Bhaluka upazila on Thursday noon.

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Safwan, 4, son of Hafez Maulana Hossain Ahmed, imam of Gangatia Central Jame Mosque and a madrasa teacher, in Paragaon Gangatia village under Habirbari union of the upazila.

According to family members, Safwan was returning home after buying snacks from a nearby shop when he accidentally slipped and fell into a nearly 10-foot-deep pond beside the local mosque.

As he did not return home, family members started searching and later recovered him from the pond.

He was taken to Bhaluka Upazila Health Complex in critical condition, where the on-duty doctors declared him dead.

Local UP member Montaj Uddin confirmed the incident.
