A sudden tornady struck the Sugandha Point of Cox’s Bazar sea beach on Friday afternoon. This brief natural disaster damaged over 50 tourist chairs and umbrellas. This caused panic among the visitors. However, there was no casualties.
The popular beach point was hit around 2:45PM on Friday (July 17).
Locals said, a swirling wind column suddenly rose from the sea and advanced towards the mainland. Within moments, it ripped a section of the sandy beach. Whirlwind lasted between three to five minutes which forced the terrified tourists to run for safety.
Mahbubur Rahman, President of the Cox's Bazar Kitkot (beach chair) Owners' Association, confirmed the incident. He stated that the tornado blew away and broke 52 wooden chairs and 61 umbrellas kept for tourists. Beach businesses suffered financial losses due to the sudden storm.
Locals noted that although the tornado was brief, its wind speed was extremely high. It lifted chairs, umbrellas, and other light items high into the air. Once the weather normalized, tourists slowly returned to the beach.
Following the incident, affected traders started clearing the broken structures to normalize the beach environment. No injuries or deaths have been reported so far.
